JACKAREA DAWSON

It was in 1988, when I first entered my Political Science class taught by Prof Stephen at West Texas A&M (formerly known as West Texas State University). The Texan born professor asked my name. He had a difficulty in pronouncing my full name. Then, out of the blue I said to him, "Prof, call me Jackarea Dawson". From that occassion in the next three years, I had been using that name in the university.

Musim pilihan raya selalu sarat dengan janji calon, isu pembangunan, dan gosip politik yang hangat. Namun, di sebalik hiruk-pikuk ini, jarang sekali kita selami bagaimana minda dan perasaan kita sendiri membentuk keputusan undi. Kita sering menyangka pilihan mengundi dibuat secara rasional, padahal ia banyak dipengaruhi oleh apa yang dipanggil kesilapan persepsi . Apabila kecenderungan untuk mempercayai tanggapan awal bercampur dengan keyakinan separuh masak, muncullah fenomena senyap tetapi kuat yang dipanggi Ramalan Pemuas Kendiri ( Self-Fulfilling Prophecy) . Ramalan ini berlaku apabila apa yang kita jangkakan tentang seseorang atau sesuatu, contohnya keyakinan bahawa Calon A "pasti menang", akhirnya menjadi kenyataan kerana tindakan kolektif kita, iaitu terus mengundi calon tersebut tanpa penilaian adil, menghala ke arah jangkaan itu. Ini bukan hanya berlaku dalam politik; ia berlaku apabila seorang guru melabel murid "lemah" sehingga murid itu benar-bena...

Affective Event Theory (AET)

 The theory demonstrated that employees react emotionally to things that happen to them at work and that this reaction influences their job performance and satisfaction  The affective events theory begins by recognizing that emotions are a response to an event in the work environment. The work environment includes everything surrounding the job—the variety of tasks and degree of autonomy, job demands, and requirements for expressing emotional labor. This environment creates work events that can be hassles, uplifts, or both. Examples of hassles are colleagues who refuse to carry their share of work, conflicting directions by different managers, and excessive time pressures. Examples of uplifting events include meeting a goal, getting support from a colleague, and receiving recognition for an accomplishment.  These work events trigger positive or negative emotional reactions.
