My Tears, Heart & Soul

It is not important who sees my tears, but who sheds it. It is not important who breaks my heart, but who win it. It is not important who kills my soul, but who praises it. My tears, my heart and my soul, They cannot be torn apart or else I achieve no goal. ( Jakaria Dasan, Sabah )

My Word: Talented Employees

Talent = Meet Manager's Expectation + Execute Superior Performance + Embrace Sense of Exception

Managerial Definition of Talented People

The managerial definition of talent is that talent is a person who delivers a superior performance (Robertson & Abbey, 2003). It is defined in terms of outcomes, delivering the goods, getting the job done better than others. Better means doing a work more quickly, more reliably, and more effectively. Once you are labeled talented, managers have put much expectation on you. Thus, talent is also about expectation. To conclude, the definition of talent in managerial perspective is those persons who are expected to deliver a superior performance on time, reliable, and efficient. (Jakaria Dasan, 2010)

Sense of Belonging and Career Success Among HODs in Public Universities

Research on career success is among the popular research in human resource management particularly in organizational behavior. The current research adds to its popularity with significant input. One of its distinctive aspects concerns the role of belonging in explaining some motivation factors that predict managers' career success. The scope of study which focuses on the academic Heads of Department, namely the deans, directors, and chairpersons in faculties, centers, and institutes respectively are what make this study unique. In relation to the second aspect, the uses of social influence theory, social cognitive career theory and work adjustment theory as the common underpinning theories to support the research framework will further highlight the importance of this study. Perhaps, the findings on the performance of the predictors chosen and the preferred outcome, or types of career success are significant. However, to the researcher, finding how sense of belonging has inspired H

My Word

To compete, you need motivation and ability... To perform, you need to compete!

My Word

Welcome greatest challenges to discover your greatest potential. Be the first to surprise yourself. But, to stay in competition, tell the man in the mirror, "Were these all I can do?"... good luck!

My Word

Not many realize the difference between 'asa' and 'satu.' When we say 'satu,' before is zero, after is two, three, and so forth. However, 'asa' is the one and only... its cannot be duplicated to others.

t is interesting to learn that political skill is a master of art. Social astuteness, interpersonal influence, apparent sincerity, and networking ability constitute political skill. Nonetheless, networking is the greatest art of politicking. Networking ability upgrade your value!

Lab's Progress...

Human and organizational-related factors are common predictors to career success. Yet, cannot undermine their influences as basic predictors for achievement. But, managerial competencies are dominant factors, especially on career strategy/management, political skill, & computer skill (the genuine usage of FB is also considered).

My Words: 5-Stage Career of Academics

According to Shaw (2008), there are five stages of academic career. It begins with a stage of initiation, routinization, secularization, solidification, and finally, graduation. Initiation stage is the stage where academics get use to the academic life. Academics a bit comfortable with their career during the routinization stage. They become vocal in terms of thought during the secularization stage. Peole, especially peers, start to acknowledge their expertise during the solidification stage. But, finally they also have to let go this interesting career. They have to graduate for the last time due to age factor. They have family to entertain full heartedly. My Words: The Challenges Ahead - Bringing back the collegiality spirit.

Dato Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the Minister of Higher Education, gave his keynote address in the International Forum held in USM, December 2009. His speech got a thunderous respects from the audiences and international participants. One of them was the Vice-Chancellor of USM, Tan Sri Prof. Dato' Dzulkifli Abdul Razak. In his article published in New Sunday Times, Dzul pointed out few issues raised up by the minister with regards to the global challenges surrounding higher education. It is for the scholar community to work collectively in facing the challenges. MY WORDS: In conjunction with the government effort to transform Malaysian higher education to the next level of hierarchy, academics have to be alert with the decreasing spirit of collegiality either, nationally or internationally. They do not even interested in working together. Everybody is waiting for the offer from nobody. It is time to act as what scholars in developing countries have been doing all this while. They

I Believe: The Key of Trust

Sonnenberg (1994) wrote, "When you act in a way that instills trust, that trust is returned. I BELIEVE: "An organization is like a safety box. The key is the employees. The safety box is not forever locked, since you are the key of that safe box. Just make sure that you are the right key to man the safety box (Dasan, 2010)."

I Believe: Gene of Color

I BELIEVE: "Liquids of yellow, blue and green, if two of them are mixed, one color will stand out! The bright or dull of son or daughter can't be ascertained through the mix of genes of father and mother, or either the father or the mother alone. Apart from hardwork, It needs good faith and decent soul" (Dasan, 2010).

My Words: Transparency in Career Progression

The Awareness on Transparency Along with the fast wave of globalization, emerged a new pool of leaders as well. At the same time, people become more alert and better informed with what is happening around them. According to Nixon (2008, p.100), “globalization means that the unfamiliar and strange are everywhere no longer world apart, but part of our world of difference. The unfamiliar of strange, is now local, next door, round the corner, on the street.” Even though globalization spurs fast process from decision to action, people are no longer ignorance. People pay detail attention on transparency aspect of the process from decision to action. In fact, there is an increase of global awareness on transparency. The changing administration of major countries around the world also shows the highly emphasis on the transparency of government administration which was announced as the primary move by the leaders immediately after their inauguration (Obama, 2010; Cameron, 2010; Abdul Razak, 2

My Words: The Power to Connect

I am still reading a book entitled "Connect - Building Success Through People, Purpose, and Performance" written by Keith Harrell and Hattie Hill. The main title "Connect" really connects me to buy this book. I want to know further about this simple word. On page seven, the authors defined connect as to "to feel and/or create a strong, positive relationship with someone (an individual or group) or something (an idea, an institution, a cause, a mission, and so on). The ultimate result of this relationship should be uplifting both for the individual and for others." In short, connect means to bind or fasten together to somebody or something. In order to get connected, one need to ensure these following three elements are there; 1) Emotional link 2) A strong feeling 3) Positive, uplifting relationship Happy Reading! My Words: 3Cs - Connect, Capable and Contribute

Academically, sense of belonging emerged from Alderian's thought. The term started as the need to belong (Edward et al., 2001) to a particular structure. Various scholars had explored the term further. Maslow (1962) stated that until the fundamental need of belonging is met, other needs go unsatisfied. Later, Bettner and Lew (1989) came up with an interesting finding stating that there are three dimensions of sense of belonging; connect, capable and count. These dimensions are applicable especially in teaching. Before motivating students to achieve greater academic successs, they should learn to connect themselves with the purpose of study and the place or environment, to be able (capable) to unleash their power (what they good at), and to contribute their knowledges and skills for the good of society. This concept, which was introduced by Bettner and Lew (1989), and popularly known as 3Cs, is best applied in school at all levels. In order to develop sense of belonging, students

My Words: Lifelong Learning - Is it an assurance for career development?

Nowadays, many working adults are going back to school. The reason underpinning this decision is mainly to enable them to be promoted to the higher ladder in their current job. In other words, this will be a tool for a promotion. However, in line with the fast pace of today's employment activities and the tendency of the long tenure of the senior executives and managers, that expectation might not turn up as expected. Thus, there is a risk for the working adults spending considerable amount of time either as part time or full time students, while their colleagues are building and strengthening their seniority at workplace. WHAT DO YOU SAY?... You may reply here or you can sent your ideas to my email, jackarea2002@yahoo.com. You also can write in bahasa. Thanks, JAKARIA DASAN Phd Candidature, School of Management, USM

My Words: Integration or Sense of Belonging

There was a survey done by Cornell University with regard to its staff satisfaction on their work life in fall 2005. Four antecedents acted as independent variables; namely, structural position, workload, life outside Cornell and integration (Martin, 2006). Integration or sense of belonging had five-items measurement. "Faculty who feel ignored, cannot navigate the unwritten rules of faculty life, are stressed by politics, are unsatisfied with opportunities to collaborate, and are considering leaving Cornell to find a more supportive work environment as a reason to leave Cornell." In other words, the faculty positive experiences with regards to the five measures had created a strong perception on the sense of belonging. The analysis also pointed out that women were less integrated than men. They constituted the large part of the less integrated faculty who tended to be less satisfied with the faculty work life. MY WORDS: this survey gives an important information about the me

My Words: Nurturing Research Culture in University

According to Li et al (2008), there must be a need to ensure the nurturing of research environment so that the faculty members who already being overloaded with teaching responsibility and other ad hoc tasks have meaningful and enjoyable research activities. This is in tandem with a global trend in which university has become sites where everyone must at some point think about everything (Nixon, 2008: 20). Thus, effort to encourage "publish or perish" dictum must first takes into consideration the environment of the work life. Li et al further cited the work of Pratt et al (1999)who believed that building a research friendly culture is a major step to improve the research productivity among academicians. Publication, then, should be rewarded accordingly. Promotion is one of the suggested rewards besides tenure and further research funding. Once the management of university shows its seriousness in implementing the culture, the faculty members will keen to engage more in res

Factors Explaining Job Satisfaction Among Faculty

Castillo and Cano (2004) had conducted a study explaining the influence of Herzberg et al (1959) Motivator-Hygiene theory on job satisfaction among the faculty in College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Science at Ohio State University. Their research was mooted by Bowen’s (1980) report that the said theory was not applicable for teacher educators in agriculture. Moreover, the motivator-hygiene theory had been popularly used in testing the level of job satisfaction. In addition to that, it was to the researchers’ intention to determine which measures constituted a valid assessment of job satisfaction. Also, the researchers wanted to validate the one-item measure of overall job satisfaction. There were 172 faculty members involved in the study. Hundred and forty eight respondents returned the questionnaires which represented 86% of the response rate. The questionnaires contained three parts. Part I consisted of 18 items from Job Satisfaction Index questionnaire. Each item was

Employees' Perception on Quality of work Life and Job Satisfaction in a Private Higher Learning Institution

A Study on the employees' perceptions towards quality of work life in private higher learning institution was done by Saad et al (2008). This research was conducted among the staff of UNITAR, one of the leading private higher learning institute in the country (Malaysia). The researchers formulated hypotheses on three objectives. First, to check whether employees' perceptions of job satisfaction is influenced by the organizational climate. Second, to identify sources of stress in higher learning environment. Third, to see whether the level of satisfaction is related to various job related aspects. Ten facets of organziational climate are used to test the relationship. These facets are grouped into affective, cognitive and instrumental. 250 were retuned with a response rate of 54.6%. 44.5% of the respondents are academicians. This fact led to the finding that only three facets namely; meaningfulness, pessimism about organization and self determination are significantly related

Doing PhD's Research

Doing PhD is not an easy one. It needs your ultimate understanding on particular topic as stated in the research topic. One day a professor asked me the difference between common research and PhD research. My answer was that PhD's research is done within specific time. The answer was no what he expected. According to him, common research is what 'publish or perish' all about. Academicians have to continually contribute their expertise on their related field of study by doing research. Meanwhile, students who pursue their PhD degree need only to go for the target of the research as specified by the supervisor. They only have to concentrate on that advise given by the supervisor (s). This is the case where PhD's students are said to be under their own management. In other word, they have to be self-management. Along the study period, they have to initiate discussions, ask for the help needed, argue about what you should be learning and so on. The students need to know t

Abilene paradox - A form of groupthink

The Abilene Paradox is a paradox in which the limits of a particular situation force a group of people to act in a way that is directly the opposite of their actual preferences. It is a phenomenon that occurs when groups continue with misguided activities which no group member desires because no member is willing to raise objections. It was observed by management expert Jerry B. Harvey in his 1988 book The Abilene Paradox and other Meditations on Management. The name of the phenomenon comes from an anecdote in the book which Harvey uses to elucidate the paradox: On a hot afternoon visiting in Coleman, Texas, the family is comfortably playing dominoes on a porch, until the father-in-law suggests that they take a trip to Abilene (53 miles away) for dinner. The wife says, "Sounds like a great idea." Although he has reservations because the drive is long and hot, thinking that his preferences must be out-of-step with the group the husband says, "Sounds good to me. I just h

Pensyarah Luar Negara -‘Promoter’ Pelancongan Negara

Hubungan Serumpun Sebangsa Malaysia-Indonesia

Labuan. Setelah 13 tahun melalui

RAHMAT HUJAN, SELEPAS BANJIR
