Quality of Work Life (QWL) - Part 1

Recently I read a journal by a researcher on quality of work life (qwl). There are several reasons why I am very interested with this topic. Above all, it is the center of my PhD thesis. However, it should be an interesting topic for the readers as well. As long as we are involved in any organization, we should understand thoroughly the meaning of QWL. As what the researcher stated that QWL increases employees' motivation to work harder and produce more, fostering loyalty, and creating more affective organizations. Therefore, if you are looking for the established environment with such atmosphere, why not read more on this topic. For a start, let take a coffee break reading my summary of QWL. Lawler 1975; Davis & Cherns, 1975; Sirgy, Efraty, Siegel and Lee, 2001) defined qwl as the well being of employees. It means that qwl are those aspects of work that the organization’s members see as desirable and as enhancing the qwl. In addition, the organizational members should parti

Point to Ponder

Mantel (1990) wrote that everything that is going to be purified must first be corrupted; that is a principle of science and art. Everything that is to be put together must first be taken apart, everything that is to be made whole must first be broken into its constituent parts, its heat, its coldness, its dryness, it moisture and so forth. by Jakaria Dasan School of Business and Economics Universiti Malaysia Sabah

TIGA JENIS PEPERANGAN SEPANJANG ZAMAN

The Five Major Motivation Theories

The Five Major Motivation Theories Group Discussion Exercise Discussion 1 – The five hierarchy of needs is widely recognized and applied. A psychologist by the name of Abraham Maslow developed the need hierarchy theory in 1943. He proposed that motivation is a function of five needs; physiological, safety, social esteem and self-actualization. The five basic needs are hierarchically based. According to him, when one’s physiologically needs are relatively satisfied, one’s safety needs emerged, and so on up the need hierarchy, one step at a time. Once a need is satisfied it activates the next higher need in the hierarchy. This process continues until the need for self-actualization is activated. Social need or sense of belongingness it the third hierarchy and is defined the same. This theory is among the most popular theory of motivation. Discussion 2 – ERG is a further research on the five hierarchy of needs. ERG stands for existence, relatedness and growth. This is a further r

Motivation Concepts

Tutorial Chapter 6 Title : Motivation Concepts Time : 9:00 am – 11:00 am (two sessions) Date : 9 Feb. 2010 Discussion Notes 1. Motivation is originated from the french word “movere” = “to move.” It must be intrinsically or extrinsically moved by an effort that has the elements of INTENSITY, DIRECTION AND PERSISTENCY. Intensity = arousal/how hard you try Direction = may be positive or negative/has goal Persistence = constant and consistent 2. ERG by Adelfer is a further research on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It differs in terms of; a) Hierarchy vs simultaneously b) 5 needs vs 3 needs c) Social/belongingness vs status needs 3. Mc Gregor’s theory X and theory Y make different assumptions on employees behaviors. Thus their needs cannot be satisfied similarly. X = negative; employees are directed or coerced into performing tasks. Y= positive; participative decision making. 4. Herzberg’s two factors theory ( motivators and hygiene factors Motivators = intrinsic

Program HIMPUN UMS anjuran HEP, 5 - 7 Feb 2010
