My Words: 5-Stage Career of Academics

According to Shaw (2008), there are five stages of academic career. It begins with a stage of initiation, routinization, secularization, solidification, and finally, graduation. Initiation stage is the stage where academics get use to the academic life. Academics a bit comfortable with their career during the routinization stage. They become vocal in terms of thought during the secularization stage. Peole, especially peers, start to acknowledge their expertise during the solidification stage. But, finally they also have to let go this interesting career. They have to graduate for the last time due to age factor. They have family to entertain full heartedly. My Words: The Challenges Ahead - Bringing back the collegiality spirit.

Dato Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the Minister of Higher Education, gave his keynote address in the International Forum held in USM, December 2009. His speech got a thunderous respects from the audiences and international participants. One of them was the Vice-Chancellor of USM, Tan Sri Prof. Dato' Dzulkifli Abdul Razak. In his article published in New Sunday Times, Dzul pointed out few issues raised up by the minister with regards to the global challenges surrounding higher education. It is for the scholar community to work collectively in facing the challenges. MY WORDS: In conjunction with the government effort to transform Malaysian higher education to the next level of hierarchy, academics have to be alert with the decreasing spirit of collegiality either, nationally or internationally. They do not even interested in working together. Everybody is waiting for the offer from nobody. It is time to act as what scholars in developing countries have been doing all this while. They

I Believe: The Key of Trust

Sonnenberg (1994) wrote, "When you act in a way that instills trust, that trust is returned. I BELIEVE: "An organization is like a safety box. The key is the employees. The safety box is not forever locked, since you are the key of that safe box. Just make sure that you are the right key to man the safety box (Dasan, 2010)."

I Believe: Gene of Color

I BELIEVE: "Liquids of yellow, blue and green, if two of them are mixed, one color will stand out! The bright or dull of son or daughter can't be ascertained through the mix of genes of father and mother, or either the father or the mother alone. Apart from hardwork, It needs good faith and decent soul" (Dasan, 2010).

My Words: Transparency in Career Progression

The Awareness on Transparency Along with the fast wave of globalization, emerged a new pool of leaders as well. At the same time, people become more alert and better informed with what is happening around them. According to Nixon (2008, p.100), “globalization means that the unfamiliar and strange are everywhere no longer world apart, but part of our world of difference. The unfamiliar of strange, is now local, next door, round the corner, on the street.” Even though globalization spurs fast process from decision to action, people are no longer ignorance. People pay detail attention on transparency aspect of the process from decision to action. In fact, there is an increase of global awareness on transparency. The changing administration of major countries around the world also shows the highly emphasis on the transparency of government administration which was announced as the primary move by the leaders immediately after their inauguration (Obama, 2010; Cameron, 2010; Abdul Razak, 2

My Words: The Power to Connect

I am still reading a book entitled "Connect - Building Success Through People, Purpose, and Performance" written by Keith Harrell and Hattie Hill. The main title "Connect" really connects me to buy this book. I want to know further about this simple word. On page seven, the authors defined connect as to "to feel and/or create a strong, positive relationship with someone (an individual or group) or something (an idea, an institution, a cause, a mission, and so on). The ultimate result of this relationship should be uplifting both for the individual and for others." In short, connect means to bind or fasten together to somebody or something. In order to get connected, one need to ensure these following three elements are there; 1) Emotional link 2) A strong feeling 3) Positive, uplifting relationship Happy Reading!
