JACKAREA DAWSON

It was in 1988, when I first entered my Political Science class taught by Prof Stephen at West Texas A&M (formerly known as West Texas State University). The Texan born professor asked my name. He had a difficulty in pronouncing my full name. Then, out of the blue I said to him, "Prof, call me Jackarea Dawson". From that occassion in the next three years, I had been using that name in the university.

Not many realize the difference between 'asa' and 'satu.' When we say 'satu,' before is zero, after is two, three, and so forth. However, 'asa' is the one and only... its cannot be duplicated to others.

Justeru itu, Universiti Malaysia Sabah dengan komitmen para pensyarahnya telah berusaha mempertingkatkan koleksi buku-buku ilmiah sedemikian. Salah satu daripada buku berkaitan adalah buku hasil tulisan Siti Aidah Hj Lokin yang bertajuk “Perubahan Sosioekonomi dan Pentadbiran – Masyarakat Peribumi Sabah (1881-1963).” Penulis adalah merupakan pensyarah bidang Sejarah Malaysia dan mengajar kursus Hubungan Etnik di Pusat Penataraan Ilmu dan Bahasa (PPIB), Universiti Malaysia Sabah. On 29 Nov., when my former boss called me whether I was free to joint his short visit to Sidratul Enterprise at Kuala Kangsar Perak, I gave him the positive respond. I had served YB Dato Seri Hj Nasir Tun Hj Sakaran, Sabah's Minister, for almost nine years. I had gained many important experiences that not many ordinary people can match up. Executive Summary This study focuses on human resource development issue among the Samah-Bajau Ethnic living at the water village in the bay of Mengkabong, or as it is popularly known as Teluk Mengkabong, Tuaran, Sabah. Mengkabong name was once in the old map of Sabah which indicated an historical value of Mengkabong itself. Therefore, the study concerning Teluk Mengkabong should be able to trace back its importance. In the old days, the size of Mengkabong Village was much larger than it is today. As time passes, 14 small villages* were born. In addition five more village** are scattered around the bay. The village of Mengkabong*** has shrunk in size. Each of the village is led by its own Head of Village or Community Leader. Last times, the major source of income came from fulltime fisherman’s activity.
