My Words: 3Cs - Connect, Capable and Contribute

Academically, sense of belonging emerged from Alderian's thought. The term started as the need to belong (Edward et al., 2001) to a particular structure. Various scholars had explored the term further. Maslow (1962) stated that until the fundamental need of belonging is met, other needs go unsatisfied. Later, Bettner and Lew (1989) came up with an interesting finding stating that there are three dimensions of sense of belonging; connect, capable and count. These dimensions are applicable especially in teaching. Before motivating students to achieve greater academic successs, they should learn to connect themselves with the purpose of study and the place or environment, to be able (capable) to unleash their power (what they good at), and to contribute their knowledges and skills for the good of society. This concept, which was introduced by Bettner and Lew (1989), and popularly known as 3Cs, is best applied in school at all levels.

In order to develop sense of belonging, students have to discover the similarities among them. Thus, this will keep them from being inferior and begin to alienate themselves from the rest (talkative and active students). They need to be creative enough to decide what he or she must do in order to belong. Teachers can encourage them by arranging more activities in group. Passive students used to be stereotyped with bad academic ability. That tendency is no longer applicable at this information age. This typical type of students have capabilities that are yet to be unveiled. Once they are able to connect, they will unleash their capability. Teachers should also encourage students to involve in community service. School participation in various civic organized campaigns is a good platform for the students to have the feeling of contribution.

In order to ensure the success application of 3Cs among the students, the teachers or the faculty members have to promote belonging among them as well (Edward, 1995). Sports and family days are part of the activity that can establish the spirit. Other activity such as getting the faculty and staff in groups to organize a quality performance or motivational oriented week should also be implemented.
